Silver pokadots and classic black and white striped paper encased with leopard or zebra ribbons. A final touch of angels, crosses and hot glue create this year's masterpieces. Lots of fancy for shirts, don't you think.........

I purchased a group of pyres bowls from the above eBay seller. They arrived with the middle bowl broken. I posted this photo to show them the broken bowl. They sent my payment, minus the shipping, bac to me and let me keep the other two bowls. I thought this was reasonable and a good way to do business. If you are going to purchase from this eBay seller, I would highly recommend them. Very nice, easy to do business with, and had good email contact. I would buy from them again.

I remember the day I rode the Big Black Bear.

When I was 5 or 6 years old, back in the early part of the 1950's, my mother took me to Central Center's Big Bear Store, on a bright clear summer's day.

There in the Big Bear store's parking lot was a man with a real black bear. The bear wore a harness and a saddle of sorts. The man was selling black bear kiddy rides.

Considering it was the fifties and neither safety, nor animal cruelty wasn't as big an issue then as now, my mother promptly handed over money and let the man put me on the bear's back for a ride.

Where on, my mother promptly snapped a photo.

It was one of my favorite photos, unfortunately lost in a fire when my father's house burnt down by accident.

But I do remember the day I rode the Big Black Bear.

If you are near Chillicothe, Ohio and you are a lover of neon, you won't want to miss talking with the folks at Scioto Architectural Salvage.

They have cleverly managed to save a Chillicothe landmark and a great piece of the 1950's pop art.

The Big Bear neon sign, which graced the entrance to Central Center's Shopping Center for the past 51 years, was removed from it's stand and is lost to Chillicothians for all time.

Lucky for some lover of neon, this sign's massive size, 8 feet tall and 12 feet long, is seeking a new home.

I was on my way to shipping to drop off some wax bears and thought I would stop and see what was new.

They just recieved a large number of vintage lighters. Very unusual to find a collection this large. I think she said over 500.

Here is a sampling of the lighters I saw. Some were very large lighters, like the man on a light pole. How funny is that.

I really love that little thrift shop. Their prices are better then the Goodwill's and Salvation Army's lately, in my opinion. Imagine that.

Seeking Vintage Treasures in Chillicothe

I went to many yard sales today. Very disappointed. My only discovery was a Chiquita Banana's Recipe Book, which I will be sharing with you on my recipe blog found in a local Goodwill's book section.

Have you seen the people running the "endless" yard sales in town. These people have a yard sale every weekend.

Now seriously if you live in small town, pay attention....if you have something worth money on Ebay and you want Ebay prices for your "something", then sell it on Ebay.

Don't call it a "yard sale" and use Ebay pricing. We shop on Ebay, we know what our preferred vintage items go for on Ebay and we will pay the Ebay price if we want something. Please don't insult us with high pricing on your chipped dishes. Right ladies?!

See Ebay has a world wide audience. A small town has a small town audience. Not many people in a small town seeking to purchase a Hull nesting bowl piece for 22.50 at a yard sale...even with it's huge chip.

I've seen many Hull nesting bowls without chippies for a whole lot less. Gotta wonder about some people. Seems they think they are the only ones who shop around.

Household Auctions

Today in southern Ohio, the weather is perfect.

Days like this are made for household auctions. I attended an auction today on Water Street, in Chillicothe, Ohio. I think every antique dealer in town was there. Quite a turn out. Lots of familiar faces, people brought their doggies, their children, and everyone had a good time.

You never know what you will find at an auction such as this.

I purchased a nesting bowl set in mint condition, that I will be adding to the website later on.

If you get a chance to attend a household auction, you should give it a try. Auctions are fun and you never know what you will find. I also purchased a newer model washer and dryer for the kids apartment. Quite a good steal at 100 for the pair.

High Price at Goodwill

Just return from a little treasure hunting around town today. I was shocked at the prices at the local Goodwill in Chillicothe, Ohio on Bridge Street.

They had the head board and foot board of a fairly old, good condition, dark wood, sleigh bed wanna be, mind you this was a remake of the original, but still about 40's or 1950's I would say.

The bed did not have the wooden side-rails, nor any side-rails at all that I could see. Just the head and foot boards.

AND THEY WANED 500.00 FOR IT!

Five Hundred Dollars in Chillicothe, Ohio...not New York, New York, mind you, but the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains.

Have they lost their minds, I ask myself. They don't even have the rails! Not even replacement metal ones.

See what Ebay has done to Goodwill. Does Goodwill only check the listing price on Ebay? Don't they have a clue about the completed auction price? Don't they take into consideration the condition....don't they take into consideration that all the pieces aren't there?

Sister please.

One of my personal favorite places to visit on the web is The Retro RedHeads. They do sell occasionally on Ebay, but they have a website too.

They sell mainly pottery, linen, and kitchen items from the 30's through the 70's. They have very fine vintage items, easy to use website layout, and you can trust these ladies. Trust is important when dealing in vintage items.

You should have heard of them by now, but in case you haven't, here is your chance to see what all the fuss has been about.

Thrift Shops and Flea Markets in Washington Court House

Last Sunday, we went to Washington Court House searching for vintage treasures. Although we made no purchases, this area is well worth a return venture.

We drove from Chillicothe out State Route 35 and went into town on the third exit, Route 62. Along this route, at the other end of town, near a Frisch's restaurant hides a Goodwill, a Volunteers of America, and a small Flea Market.

Now the Goodwill isn't open on a Sunday, but we were there earlier in the week. It is clean, well organized, and the prices are negotiable on items that have been there for awhile.

Goodwill places a date on most price tags, if you look, you can see how long an item has been there. The items that have been there a couple months, are usually negotiable. At least worth the asking.

The Volunteers of America was dirty, messy, unorganized and over prices as usual. If Ebay prices or Antique Store prices are expected, then the ambience should accompany.

The small Flea Market beside the Goodwill was charming, friendly, and well stocked. I loved the feel of this place. Definitely worth the trip.

After the adventure on State Route 62, we returned to Route 35 and continued west. You will run into the Jeffersonville Outlet Malls. Nice bit of outlet mall shopping. Not vintage, but then not everything is. A good bargain is a good bargain.

Now, right there at the Jeffersonville Malls, you will see Interstate 71. We drove north on Interstate 71 to the next exit. There is a shopping mall that wasn't doing so well as a shopping mall, so it has been converted into a giant flea market.

There was a large antique furniture shop, but it was closed on Sundays. Just my luck, drats! I am going to try and make the trip this Saturday, if all goes well. I will make a full report.

The fleamarket wasn't well stocked with the numerous vendors I would expect, but I am going to chalk this up to the winter chill and not blame it on Ebay......this time.

Goodwill's Auction Site Spoiling Treasure Seeking

I use to have the enormous fun going to the Goodwill's. It seemed there was always buried treasure to be found as I rummaged. I looked forward to adding to my ever growing collection of "good junk" and loosing myself in a day of shopping.

But lately the spoils of my daily treasure hunting were becoming rare and hard to find. I couldn't help but wonder why?

So I ask. While talking to some of the employees, they casually informed me that Goodwill has it's own auction site. The employees are taught to look for anything of a vintage nature and they sit the vintage items aside. A more experienced "vintage" employee does eBay research on price, ect. Goodwill's from around the country add their "spoils" to the online Goodwill auction site.

Because of this, I rarely go to a Goodwill any longer.

Granted, they have every right to do with their stuff, what they want. I give them that. I am just saddened that the thrift shops of today are not the thrift shops of 10 years or so ago.

If they aren't putting their "freebies" on Ebay, they now each have their own auction sites.

I loved the thrill of the hunt, the excitement of finding an old vintage item to decorate my home with. Now those days are gone.........

You got to wonder how long these brick and mortar thrift shops will be around, if everything on their shelves are online left overs? Only the "least" desirable of items are placed in the actual store. If it didn't sell on line, then you have can purchase it.

All I ever see in Goodwill's any longer is left over, couldn't sell it on line, real trash. So much for treasures.

Portsmouth, Ohio had two Goodwills, this one located on 9th Street. Ye Olde Book Shoppe is where old books find new lives. I am not a book collector, but the amazing amount of old books in this shop amazed even me. Row after row of vintage books and magazines. There were some vintage bricbrac, clothes, and other items, but not alot.

We had a blast in this Goodwill store on a main drag through town. The store was large, bright, airy, and clean. The only drawback I could find was the prices were a bit on the high side. Although on this trip, we found no treasures, at this shop, I will visit again.

I am on my way to little shop downtown called Funk and Junk. The name says it all! Full to the brim of funky retro junk. I just love this shop. I hope to bring back tons of photos, if they will let me. It is located on Paint Street in downtown Chillicothe, Ohio. Best of all, it sits right beside the Goodwill store, so you can do some treasure searching on your own!

The gloves were found at the Cancer Thrift Shop downtown in Chillicothe, alone with the purse. The gloves have never been worn, the tag was still attached. I don't know if you can see the little beads on the gloves, but up close, they are exquisit

The vintage chicks are expanding their booths at the 23 Southbound Fleamarket. We will have more vintage items for sale since we will have more room. You will find us in the first isle by the highway, on the right hand side as you walk down the isle.
Just look for the vintage clothes hanging on the walls. We will be mixing primitive handmade candles in amongst the vintage clothing and other treasures. Don't forget, Missy has a lot of vintage treasures from her Aunt's life long accumulation from auctions, thrift shop, and goodwill's.
You will love all of our vintage treasures and trash! We are a total of 6 booths full of amazing junk! Some is just amazing and not vintage at all, but as long as it takes your breath away........we are happy!

Vintage Flea Market Finds

If you get a change see out on line shop at the Vintage Chicks Retro Finds or come and vist us at the 23 Southbound Flea Market located near Piketon, Ohio on state route 23 South. The market is open 9 a.m. till 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. They have great food to go with the indoor and out door vendors. You just never know what you will find! See you there!

Vintage Cigar Boxes Made into Purses

I found two handmade cigar box purses at the local flea market, near Piketon, Ohio. The first shown here, front and back, is a retro glance back at the Beatles. I like the wild side of this purse!

Don't miss the yellow depression dishes in front of the cigar box purse. The vintage depression dishes were Princess design. Nice depression dishes with no chipping or scratches. I would say they were in mint condition and cheaper in price then depression use to be.

I feel with the coming of Ebay, some prices have changed in the collectible world.

This could be because ebay has every one cleaning out every closet they can find to sell on line, thereby the discovery of more dishes then one would have thought existed originally. I could be wrong.

Perhaps it is only in southern Ohio where the price for depression dishes have fallen. These dishes were only a couple dollars each. I have noticed that depression dishes are not the passionate collectible that they once were here in this area.

Hey, by the way, don't forget to visit us at the 23 Southbound Flea Market, located on 23 South below Piketon, Ohio. About 20 minutes north of Portsmouth. (Another great place to find vintage treasures cheap) The Flea Market is open on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Nicely air-conditioned inside with lots of great vintage finds. There is a decent restaurant and indoor restrooms.
You will not believe how many set up on the outside to sell their vintage wares.
I did find 4 boxes of vintage detergents there, that I placed on Ebay. I made 87.03 for a four dollar investment.
You will love what you find at the Southbound Flea Market.

I just had to tell you about another vintage shop that I really love. It is called Hey Viv! Heck, you have to love the name if nothing else.

They have larger sizes, stylish vintage clothing, and the prices are right. Honest people. I really like what they have to offer. Viv responses to email quickly too. That is a definite plus.

Vintage Hats

It has been quite sometime since I could find vintage hats at the thrift shops. I was at a local auction last night, but the prices of the hats were to high for their condition and style.

You can find local auctions by looking in your newspaper. They are usually listed a week or more in advance. Most auctions are on a Saturday, but occasionally you can find a smaller auction during an evening. Check for local auction houses that take consignment or auction off whole estates.

The two hats are in good clean condition and suitable for decorating. The price was right...only 1.00 each. You can't beat that for a treasure hunt find! You just have to keep looking. It is a daily search, but a brief stop at your favorite thrift shop could yeild amazing results. Today, the results were a pure delight!

Add these hats to a dressing table or have a whole wall of vintage hats. Pile vintage hats in an old hat box and place on a corner shelf. Decorate with the vintage touch.

Vintage Elsie the Cow Advertising

The Elsie the Cow sewing kit and the WW2 advertising piece were both found in the same location. I think these were wonderful treasures for a total of 60 cents, plus tax.

How cute is this little sewing kit. I spotted this nestled in a box of sewing items. While digging through, I found another vintage advertising piece. I just love the WW2 graphics! Both can be purchased on my web site Vintage Chicks.

I found this little Elsie the Cow advertising piece at a local thrift shop alone with another Second World War advertising piece. Inside both were sewing needles.

I am looking for a web site about the 1950's and 1960's Alien craze for a link exchange with a vintage web site I own.
